Administrative Departments

There are 37 departments in the County, most of which report directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The Auditor, Community Development Commission, County Counsel, Executive Office of the Board of Supervisors, and Fire Department report directly to the Board of Supervisors. The Assessor, District Attorney and Sheriff are elected officers so work with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Supervisors, but do not report to them.

Highlights

CAO - Historical
General Wayne Allen was selected as the County's first chief administrative officer in 1938 and served 13 years. He was one of 11 people to serve in the position, one twice and one father and son.

Organizational Structure
The administrative structure of County government was revised in 2007 to provide more control to the chief executive officer, formerly the chief administrative officer. The CEO, instead of the Board of Supervisors, now supervises most department heads.
