The County Counsel provides legal services to the Board of Supervisors and county departments, using county attorneys and outside law firms for specialized cases. County attorneys who are involved in criminal cases work for the District Attorney's Office, the Public Defender's Office and the Alternate Public Defender's Office.

Litigation Cost Management
The latest report shows the County paid $100 million in judgments and settlements in 2008-09.

Risk Management
The County issues an annual report on its losses and costs for workers’ compensation, vehicle liability, general liability, and medical malpractice self-insurance programs. The report is intended to assist departments in implementing effective loss control and prevention programs to mitigate future losses.

	Affirmative Action Compliance County employees or applicants for County employment who feel discriminated against may file a complaint with the Affirmative Action Compliance Office.
	Alternate Public Defender The Alternate Public Defender's Office provides legal representation to indigent defendants the Public Defender's Office is unable to represent, due to a conflict of interest or availability, for court proceedings.
	County Counsel The County Counsel's Office provides legal representation, advice and counsel to the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and other public officers and agencies. It does not engage in the practice of criminal law.
	District Attorney The District Attorney’s office prosecutes individuals charged with crimes, assists victims and witnesses, and assist resolving neighborhood dispute.
	Public Defender The Public Defender's Office provides legal representation to persons, including juveniles, who are financially unable to employ counsel in criminal proceedings.
