Legal Departments

The County Counsel provides legal services to the Board of Supervisors and county departments, using county attorneys and outside law firms for specialized cases. County attorneys who are involved in criminal cases work for the District Attorney's Office, the Public Defender's Office and the Alternate Public Defender's Office.

Litigation Cost Management
The latest report shows the County paid $100 million in judgments and settlements in 2008-09.

Risk Management
The County issues an annual report on its losses and costs for workers’ compensation, vehicle liability, general liability, and medical malpractice self-insurance programs. The report is intended to assist departments in implementing effective loss control and prevention programs to mitigate future losses.
