These include providing low-cost and no-cost care at public and private facilities, coordinating the emergency medical services system, working to prevent disease, and protecting against basic threats to public health.

Highlights

Whooping Cough Cases Growing
The number of pertussis (whooping cough) cases reported in Los Angeles County continues to rise, prompting public health officials to urge residents to get vaccinated if they live with or work around an infant. Whooping cough can lead to pneumonia, seizures and death. Infants are particularly susceptible to the illness, but cannot be vaccinated.

Obesity: Biggest Health Threat to Pets
Pet owners are reminded that they need to ensure they are providing a healthy lifestyle for their animals. Obesity is the biggest health threat to pets. Like humans, animals need exercise, check-ups and a healthy diet.

Private Provider Health Care
Health care is provided at more than 100 privately-operated facilities to low-income residents who do not qualify for Medi-Cal or any other government or third-party assistance programs.
